Ashton took a walk right away this morning and then was hungry so he ate his snack. He did not start his morning work and said he was tired and was going to lay down. He was told that was not an option to lay down. He went to his desk and put his head down and yelled at the teacher when prompted to work (offered water and assistance). Ashton yelled at the teacher and put his head down. He did fall asleep and slept for an hour (staff tried to wake him). When he woke he was less irritable and able to have respectful conversation. After a half hour he got to work on his morning packet which is usually completed within the first hour. (Once started it takes him about 15 minutes most days).
Ashton continued to struggle with focus and even though the room was very quiet he insisted he could not focus. He was offered alternative work space and movement breaks but he rejected the offers.
Positive note: A mentor comes to talk to the students a few Thursdays a month when his schedule allows. Ashton joined a small group of boys who enjoy talking with the mentor. In the past Ashton has not shown an interest but this year he is more comfortable joining the other boys. Ashton and the mentor have some common interests like fixing and building things.
Ashton took homework with him to be completed and returned tomorrow morning so that he can stay on track for assignment completion for project two.
